The gravel road in the picture is the Rallarvegen, a construction road built from 1902 to 1904 in connection with the construction of the Bergensbanen railline. It runs from Haugastøl via Finse to Myrdal station and down to Flåm by the Sognefjord.
The road is named after the 'rallar' or navvies, the railway construction workers.
The road is now a popular bicycle road. Every year, in the short season from July to September, over 20000 cyclists travel the route.
Finse is an area in the Ulvik municipality of Hordaland, Norway. The railway station at Finse (Finse Station) on the Bergensbanen at 1,222m is the highest station on the entire Norwegian railway system.
In March 1979 Finse was the place in which George Lucas chose to shoot the ice planet Hoth in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, because its chilling landscape matched the fiction.
