The civil war where the U.S.A. backed government troops, cost the lives of 60,000 citizens. An earthquake in 1986 devastated the capital of San Salvador, leaving more than 2000,000 homeless. Nine-tenths of the Salvadoreans are of mixed Spanish-Indian stock. El Salvador also has nearly two dozen volcanoes.
